IREAD Guidance for Parents

Dear HIAT Families,

As we prepare for the upcoming IREAD assessment during the school year, I want to thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your child’s academic success. The IREAD assessment measures foundational reading skills and helps determine whether students are on track for future academic achievement.

At HIAT, we are committed to ensuring that every scholar is prepared, confident, and ready to do their best. Your support at home is an important part of this process.

The Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD) is a reading assessment developed in accordance with state legislation. IREAD is designed to measure foundational reading skills based on Indiana Academic Standards through grade three. Students begin participation in IREAD at grade 2 and continue to participate until they pass the assessment or are promoted to grade 7. Students who do not pass IREAD receive appropriate reading remediation and interventions to encourage their development of those essential reading skills. Grade 3 students who do not pass IREAD and do not qualify for a Good Cause Exemption (GCE) are retained (IC) 20-32-8.5-2.

How Parents Can Help

Encourage Daily Reading

Have your child read for at least 20–30 minutes each day.
Discuss what they are reading and ask questions about the text.
Encourage reading a variety of materials, including books, magazines, and informational articles.

Establish Healthy Routines

Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep before testing days.
Provide a healthy breakfast each morning.
Arrive at school on time to help your child start the day feeling calm and prepared.

Build Confidence

Encourage your child to do their best and remind them that they are capable of success.
Avoid placing unnecessary pressure on test performance.
Celebrate effort, growth, and perseverance.

Prepare for Testing

Remind your child to read each question carefully.
Encourage them to take their time and use the strategies they have learned in class.
Reinforce the importance of staying focused throughout the assessment.

Expectations for Staff

Instruction

Continue providing high-quality, standards-based literacy instruction daily.
Utilize small-group instruction to address individual student needs.
Monitor student progress regularly and adjust instruction based on data.
Ensure students have opportunities to practice reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and foundational skills.

Intervention

Provide targeted interventions for students identified as at-risk.
Utilize available assessment data to guide intervention plans.
Document intervention efforts and student progress.

Student Motivation

Encourage students to give their best effort each day.
Celebrate growth and progress, not just proficiency.
Create a positive and supportive testing environment.
Reinforce confidence and a growth mindset.

Testing Procedures

Follow all Indiana Department of Education testing guidelines and security requirements.
Ensure testing rooms are prepared and free from distractions.
Review testing schedules and accommodations prior to testing.
Report any testing concerns immediately to administration.

IREAD-3 Information from IDOE:

What is IREAD-3?

IREAD-3 will be administered to students enrolled in grade 3. Achieving proficiency on this assessment fulfills the requirements of Public Law 109 (H.B. 1637), designed to ensure that students can read before accessing fourth-grade curriculum. This assessment was piloted in Spring 2011. Following a standard-setting process in the Summer of 2011 to set proficiency levels, the assessment was operationalized in Spring 2012.

When is IREAD-3 administered?

IREAD-3 will be administered following the ISTEP+ Applied Skills assessment window in mid-March.

What is assessed on IREAD-3?

Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 specifically assesses foundational reading standards through grade three.

What is the structure of IREAD-3?

IREAD-3 includes three test sessions, which are comprised of multiple-choice questions only.
